The Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit is tasked primarily with conducting the forensic analysis of computers suspected to contain evidence of child pornography crimes.  Funding for the unit continues to be mainly through the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and a partnership with the Northern New England Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

We do investigate all computer crimes and assist state, county, and local law enforcement officers in conducting investigations in which computers are involved.

The Unit also conducts pro-active on-line peer to peer investigations aimed at identifying and making viable criminal cases against individuals who prey on children via the Internet. The Unit continues to have a high volume of Peer to Peer investigations. In 2007 the number rose to nearly 15,000 contacts, an increase of 79.3 percent over 2006.  There is a fair amount of redundancy in the numbers this year as there was last year, but it is clear we still have a huge problem.
